February 2014

posted Feb 16, 2014, 8:05 AM by Loddon Quilters

2014 started well with members keen to begin the new ‘Loddon’ Quilt. The central log

cabin block (16.5" x 12.5" finished block size, plus ¼" seam allowance all round) was the

starting block with demonstrations and ideas from Diana. Some members had already ‘had a go’

and showed how versatile log cabin is. Remember it is easier to trim than to add to the size of

your block, so if yours measures 17.5" x13.5" that is fine, you can trim it later.

Bring along your blocks to the meeting so that we can display them and see how it is progressing.

This month the demonstration will be of pieced trees for the block to the right of the log cabin

– size 13" x 20" finished size, plus ¼"seam allowance all round. This is a tall block and could

be one large tree or a forest of smaller trees. Strip piecing notes for some trees are attached and

templates for others will be available at the meeting. You can use freezer paper or cardboard

(cereal packets are fine) for templates, there will be some available, plus tracing paper, to use at

the meeting.

We will also be showing you the third block (for March) which will be foundation pieced –

leaves – which fits above the log cabin block.

In March we will introduce quilt as you go for those who want to use this method. If you don’t

want to quilt as you go we will show you how to layer and quilt your quilt in one go later in the

year.

Show and Tell

Members have been busy! We had a great show of quilts and bags. Everyone was in awe of

Elizabeth’s Baltimore quilt – all done by hand. Don’t forget to check out the photos on our

website.

Also on the website you will find photos and newsletters, past and present – well worth a browse!

The library – we now have so many books that you can borrow 2 at time and return and

borrow at any time during the meeting, but please remember to sign them out, and back in when

you return them.

Fabric and notions sale in January.

This was a great success, members had some bargains and £260 was raised for the local hospice.

Our thanks to Ann for bringing and selling.

Adhesive 505

This is a useful addition to your quilting notions, but please use it at home as it may pose a health

risk to some members. It is recommended that it is used in a well ventilated space.
