July 2013 Newsletter  Meeting Thursday 18th
Our June meeting was as busy as ever, we had a good attendance despite the improving weather! Barbara demonstrated the use of freezer paper and Grandmothers fan block. You can now buy freezer paper by the roll from many quilt shops, it comes in 3 lengths, so check, it seems to last for ages! Postage can double the price so if you are going to a show, or know someone who is, its worth buying it there. Paper

We are all delighted to hear that Pris is making a good recovery from her recent surgery.

Thanks to all the members who have helped out with storage while Pris is away, Jacky has
taken ironing boards, Ursula fabric boxes and Jeannette, Patsy and Sybil have taken on the
refreshments, which is a great help – thank you very much.
Sally will be doing a demonstration of the origami block for us this month. If you want to have a go you  will need -

To make one 4” block:
• a piece of background fabric 4½” square (anything will do as it will not show on the finished block so don't use anything good.)
• a 6” square of your top fabric (plain, tone on tone or very small print works best). If your material is stiff, e.g. batik, it is advisable to wash it first.
• pins
• beads or matching embroidery thread or small shirt buttons to finish the centre of the block.
You could make several blocks either in the same fabric or in toning colours and join them together with a contrast sashing and border to make a baby quilt or a cushion cover.
We have the scrap boxes of fabric so if you want to have a go and then donate it we can make up a cushion cover.
Sally will demonstrate in the morning and again in the afternoon so everyone will have a chance to see. Sally will be on hand if you need help/advice making up the block.
Following consultation with members we have made donations to Project Linus (for postage ), The Polio Fellowship, PALS (a local charity helping disabled children) and The Pink Place, Basingstoke  (providing pampering for patients with cancer). Thank you to all our members, it is your efforts that raises the money for these donations.
Sherfield Hall is raising its hire rates for 2013/14 by 25%. They have upgraded many of their facilities etc. so.................... Unfortunately this means we are going to have to raise our subscriptions next year to £18, payable in September - still very good value we hope you’ll agree.

We are going to start a library of quilting and patchwork books. Jan Murray has agreed to run it so now we need your help to set it up.  We want to know which books you would like in the library. Please bring  to the meeting your 2 favourite books, which you think members might like in the library, clearly marked with your name. We will put them out on a table and members can browse through them and vote for their favourites. We will do the same in August, so don't worry if you can't make this meeting/forget to bring your books/ etc. We will buy some books to start our library in September.
August meeting – if any one would like to bring a grandchild to this meeting please let me know at the July meeting. We would like to encourage Young Quilters.
