June 2011 Newsletter We were pleased to welcome Becky Hay to our May meeting with her lovely Moda fabrics. Many of us were tempted by her great selection of fabrics, jelly rolls and layer cakes – now we have to decide how to use them! We have had grateful thanks from the charities we supported with our Show. Their letters of appreciation are on the notice board. We still have a green glass plate belonging to a cake maker, it will be at the next meeting. Our appliqué show and tell was a great success and showed what a variety of methods there are for appliqué. See the website for photos. Barbara demonstrated Bondaweb and Pris how to appliqué the petals she had demonstrated to make a super wall hanging or quilt. Pris has made hers into a fire screen, which is a real winner. Have you seen the June issue of Popular Patchwork? http://www.popularpatchwork.com/sites/4/documents/june11contents.pdf The fun flower picnic quilt is just like Pris' – remember you saw it first at Loddon Quilters! This month we are thinking about borders and edgings, something we tend to think about after we have made our quilts. If you have something with an interesting border or edging bring it along for Show and Tell, let's see how many different ones we can find. We will demonstrate continuous binding with mitred corners. There is lots of help on the web – try these for starters - http://www.ludlowquiltandsew.co.uk/Binding_Mitred_Corners.html – this site has lots of free patterns and helpful diagrams http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wprg5vzkuGw&feature=related – there are so many quilting videos on YouTube you can always find help there, if you have time – and don't get side tracked watching 'how to...' instead of getting on and doing!! The Quilters Guild is asking you for your vote. Our Heritage Lottery-funded project ‘Unfolding the Quilts’, based at the Quilt Museum and Gallery in York, has reached the semi-finals of the National Lottery Awards, the annual search to find Britain’s favourite Lottery-funded projects. The Lottery funding has enabled the Quilt Museum and Gallery to work with over 180 volunteers and reach 7,000 children and adults with our Education and Outreach programme since we opened in 2008. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are competing against nine other projects to be voted the ‘Best Heritage Project’ and if we reach the final, our project – and the Quilt Museum and Gallery – will be featured in the televised finals on BBC 1. This would be tremendous publicity for quilting and for the Quilt Museum and Gallery. Please help us reach the finals by voting for “Unfolding the Quilts”. Go to www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards to cast your vote now. If you haven't voted yet please do it now – this is your chance to help quilting and the Quilters Guild reach a wider audience.
