September 2011 Newsletter It was a quieter meeting in August, partly because of holidays and partly because of the terrible weather which soaked many stalwart quilters. We still had a good meeting and welcomed 2 new members. Pris demonstrated how to create landscapes. As always she made it look very easy – have you tried it yet? If so, do bring your landscape along to the meeting so we can see how it is going. Subscriptions will be collected this month. We are holding the subscription at £16, for this year, despite a huge increase in the hall rates. Loddon Quilters Constitution As part of the preparation for our show in April we became affiliated to the Quilters Guild, which included insurance for the group. In order to become affiliated we had to draw up a constitution, a copy of which is on the noticeboard and on the website. We will in future have a committee, which will spread the load now that the group is larger. For the year 2011- 2012 this will be a steering group consisting of Pris, Barbara, Diana, Joan(webmaster) and Jackie (treasurer). As the year goes on we will decide what other positions would be useful and hopefully co-opt 'volunteers'! Next September we can hold elections for those posts. The constitution also limits our numbers to 60, which we have now reached, and prospective members will go on a waiting list until there is a vacancy. If you know people who want to join us please tell them there is now a waiting list. At our September meeting we will have our Annual General Meeting – do not be worried about this, it will be an informal affair, hopefully proving that nothing has really changed! We will have a brief report on the year and some idea of what we hope to do in the new year. We will be introducing our new ‘blocks of the month’, starting in October, when there will be a workshop for you to join in for instruction if you want to. If you want to get ahead, our Christmas party gift will be a mug rug (we know, but Christmas is only 3 months away and we are all so busy!) For newcomers - our Christmas party is at the December meeting and we all make a ‘gift’ for the lucky dip. If you don’t know what a mug rug is we will show you at the meeting and give you some ideas each month – if you want to find your own ideas Google ‘mug rug’ and look at the Images, alternatively try these links – http://www.twomoreseconds.com com /p/mug-rug-madness.html www.fatcatpatterns.com/images/Mug%20Rugs/2011_MR_%20Fiesta.pdf http://sewhappygeek.co.uk/ If you have difficulty accessing these links from this page, try copy and paste into your browser. Meeting Thursday 15th. September The Quilters' Guild has reached the finals of the national lottery awards due to your votes in June. We are competing against two other projects to be voted the "Best Heritage Project". To vote again to make it possible for us to be the winner, please go to www.lotterygoodcauses.org.uk/awards and cast your vote for "Unfolding the Quilts". Please ask all your friends and family to vote too. If you do not have access to a computer, you can vote by phone, just call 0844 836 9716. Calls cost only 5p from a BT landline, but may be more from a mobile phone. Voting is from 2nd to 26th September. Voting is monitored so you can only vote once. The Guild will be featured on the Lottery programme sometime during September, this will highlight patchwork and quilting, and particularly the guild museum, so do make a point of watching. The result will be announced in November. Diary Dates Quilters Guild Regional Day Speakers – Pat Deacon And Deanne Hartwell-Jones Saturday 1st.
