It was an excellent start to our new year with a hall full of keen quilters. It doesn't seem possible that we are starting our fifth year of Loddon Quilters! Several members brought along their landscape quilts, let's have a good display of them this month. We had a good Show and Tell, so many quilts - really inspiring for our new year. Subscriptions – don't worry if you couldn't pay last month you can do it this month. This year you can write your own names and numbers on your membership cards. Keep them with you as some places will give discount if you belong to a group – e.g. Cutting Edge – its always worth a try. At our first Annual General Meeting there was a brief report of our successful year with our quilt show in April. The steering group of Pris, Barbara, Diana, Jackie and Joan will be working together running the group. During the year additional members may be co-opted. Next year there will be elections for some of the positions on the committee. Our finances are in a healthy state and will be held in reserve to cushion future hall rate rises, which are inevitable. Jackie Morgan has taken on the role of Treasurer. Our projects for the coming year were unveiled. We will have a pieced block of the month with an appliqued silhouette on an Olympic theme. There will be a workshop for you to join in for instruction if you want to. There will be 10 blocks so you can make a quillow, but as always it will be up to you how many blocks you make and what you make them into. Members expressed an interest in having a trader again, especially if they have threads as well as fabric. The committee will look into this for a future meeting. Block of the month - athletics The first athletics block is attached giving cutting instructions, if you would like help rotary cutting bring your fabric and someone will guide you through – we have a cutting board and cutter you can use. The workshop will show you how to put the block together if you are unsure, the important part is lining up your seams accurately. Colours are up to you, as many or as few as you like, multicoloured blocks could be co-ordinated by the silhouettes, if you want one fabric represented in every block it would be a good idea to buy at least ½ a metre. If you find a block you like and think represents athletics, that's fine, you don't have to follow our suggestions – its your quilt! We all love seeing the variety of quilts that come from one idea. Silhouettes will start next month, but again, you can design your own if you wish. Our Christmas party gift will be a mug rug (Christmas is now only 2 months away) There are samples for ideas and Barbara will demonstrate a foundation pieced coffee mug. You can use any material, any design, any technique for your mug rug, which should measure – roughly – 9” x6”. Meeting Thursday 20th. October is giving a talk on Thursday 27th.
