Loddon Quilters Row quilt challenge – 2017/8

This quilt will be made up of rows based on 8” blocks (or 4” blocks if you want a further challenge)

Size –width made up of 5 x 8” blocks= 40”

or 1 x 40”

or 2 x20”

or any variation giving a 40” row (20” for small 4” block quilt)

There will be 6 rows starting in October.

Rows will introduce different techniques, which can be followed exactly, added to or changed. You can do all or some; make a quilt, a runner, a placemat – just join in!

The committee will each introduce a row, starting in October.

To be decided later – Sashing , borders and binding

Choice of theme or no theme – committee will use ‘Out and About’ for 8” block rows, you can choose your own theme or no theme, just different techniques or colours.

Row 1 - October

Strip piecing – as simple or complicated as you wish to make it.

This can be 5 x 8” blocks, all the same, all different, arranged in the same way or rotated etc.

If you choose to follow the committee theme of ‘Out and about’ this row will be ‘Sky’

You can do a smaller quilt applying the same technique to a 4” block – the sample is going to use ‘rainbow’ as the theme.

Joan introduced the first row. She did 5 different blocks illustrating skies. The blocks do not have to be different, they could be all the same.

Blocks can be embellished if you want to with, for example, applique

The red sample is made of 5 x 4” blocks with straightforward strip piecing – you do not have to follow the ‘Out and about ‘ theme

Row 2 – November

Piecing – any block such as log cabin, delectable mountain (Google these if you are not sure.) half square triangles etc.

The committee theme is Out and About and this row is Mountains.

Jacky had made a row using log cabin on point and joined into a 40” row.

She had also done a delectable mountain block and a strip pieced block as alternatives.

The 4” blocks were Delectable Mountain in orange fabrics.

The rows will be on show at the meeting and photos will be added here next month.
