2018 AGM

Loddon  Quilters              AGM report Thursday 20th. September 2018

Welcome to another year of Loddon Quilters, we are now so well established we have stopped counting how many years. It’s good to see some new faces and we hope you will enjoy being a Loddon Quilter. For the first time in many years we no longer have a waiting list.

Some housekeeping items before we start the AGM:-

·       Please remember to sign in, the list is arranged alphabetically by first names.

·       Help yourselves to tea, coffee, biscuits and cake and put 50p in the box.

·       We have Bondaweb for sale at £1 for 30cm, it has been cut into 30cm. pieces, see Joan if you want a larger piece. Put the money in the Bondaweb box.

·       Freezer paper is for sale at 50p @metre.

·       Scrappy box and magazines are there for you to help yourself and put a donation in the donations box.

·       Last, but not least, please wear your name badge – and your Loddon Quilters badge, if you can find it! It does help all members to put a few names to faces. If you want help making a badge see one of the committee and we will give you ideas.

And so to our AGM. The agenda, as usual, is:-

Agenda

  • Election of committee
  • Annual report 2017/18
  • Financial report 2017/18
  • Plans for 2018/19
  • Any other business

Election of Committee

Since 2011 Loddon Quilters has had a constitution and we have an AGM each year. We like to keep it informal and not too long, but it does give us an opportunity to review the past year and look forward to the new year, which we hope members, new and established, will enjoy.

Apart from the aims the constitution does state -

1.    that we are run by a committee

For those of you who don’t know us, the main committee comprises:-

Chair - Barbara

Vice chair - Pris

Treasurer - Jacky

Webmaster and membership secretary - Joan,

Diana arranges events etc. such as our bring and buy today.

Chris is our technical advisor.

Rachel is our (minutes) secretary

I propose that the present committee continues for another year.  Any objections?    Seconder?

The main committee does not do all the work, we like to take this opportunity to say

A special thank you to:-

·       All the members who volunteer to help – organising the refreshments, helping with demonstrations, and taking care of equipment.  It makes life so much easier for the main committee when we know there is help at hand.

             ·       To all of you who joins in our challenges and projects, without you to inspire us our job would be much harder and less rewarding.

·       As always a special thank you to the cake fairy, who loves making cakes – aren’t we lucky!

As we say every year - We want this to be your group so any ideas please put them in the suggestions box or speak to a member of the committee

Annual Report of 2017/18

This will be brief as I am sure most of you know what we have been doing during the past year.

Our challenge this past year has been ‘rows’. Each month a member of the committee has introduced a technique for a row. Based on either a 4” or 8” block the rows have grown into quilts of varying shapes and sizes, many of which are displayed here today and will make a stunning display at our show next year.

Dusty took part in the Jane Austen challenge making a block which is now part of the Jane Austen quilt displayed at the Jane Austen museum in Chawton. Well worth a visit.

The Xmas tree group put together our first entry for the Christmas tree festival in the local church. Our musical theme was ‘Starlight Express’. It was a lovely sight when the lights were switched on and our Christmas tree was decorated with your blue and white stars.

Our bring and buy sales are always a success and help everyone out. Another opportunity today to browse, bring and buy.

Earlier in the year we had a visit from local Basingstoke quilting shop, Purple Stitches, who brought a huge range of fabrics and quilting notions to tempt us.

In July we had a ‘first’ when we had a workshop by an outside tutor, Gail Lawther. This was a great success and we shall have a gallery of Twilight Silhouettes on display at our show.

Last month our Facebook page went ‘live’ thanks to Agna, we hope this will become a hub for your photos and comments. It is a closed group just for Loddon Quilters, so see Agna if you want to join.

Our Show and Tells are always so inspirational, and we love to share! This is probably your most appreciative audience because we all know how much time and effort goes into making quilts, so keep bringing your work for us to see.

Financial report. – Jacky

Financial report is on the notice board. Our finances are healthy at the moment. This year subscriptions will just cover the hall costs if we have 60 paid up members so we shall be using our funds for expenses such as insurance.

Thanks to Jacky, our very efficient treasurer – she is collecting subscriptions today, which will be £20 for the coming year.

Future plans

Next year we have our biennial show – Thursday 16th. May

We have a show committee preparing to organise the show. There are new members on the committee who will be working with the ‘old’/previous committee so that they can take over the organisation of the following (2021!) show and the old committee will step down. Thank you to all those members who volunteered to join the committee – many hands make light work.

In October we shall be getting down to work  and needing your help  (details later) but of course the show will not be a show without your quilts, so start sorting out your quilts so that you will be ready to register your entries in January.

Although the show will be foremost in our minds this year there will be other things going on.

In October we have a chequered Dresden plate workshop -  details later today

November will be a ‘catch up month’

December – our usual Christmas festivities – you will need your secret Santa, which this year will be a covered notebook, no larger than A6 (6”x4”) so you can start thinking about that, more details later about our Christmas meeting nearer the time.

2019

We shall be preparing for the show. The committee will be asking for your help so watch this space. The time will go very quickly and there is a lot to be done if the show is to be as successful as previous ones.

The charities we are supporting this time are The Ark Cancer Centre in Basingstoke and the British Lung Foundation.

When the show is over we shall have time to draw breathe and think of the next challenge.

An early date for your diaries is Thursday 12th. September 2019 when, by popular request, Gail Lawther will be returning with another workshop.

So it is going to be another busy year.

That concludes my report.
